At the Bonneville Salt Flats, the Moto Guzzi land speed racing team,Cooked Goose Racing set two new land speed records at the SCTA/BNI world finals.Cooked Goose Racing went from an off-the-cuff suggestion over an internet chat line,to a serious race team in three months --- all over the internet."We borrowed one of the Moto Guzzi Owners of America Club members's 1988 motorcycle," says Amsoil Direct Dealer Roy Goyette,
"... and went to Bonneville Salt Flats to do some racing.Just imagine, we took an eleven-year-old motorcycle out to set land speed records and we blew them away."
"The Moto Guzzi had to be in the basic stock configuration it was in when it came off the showroom floor. The previous record of 119 miles-per-hour was held by a Harley Davidson, Cooked Goose shattered that mark with a top speed of 124 mile per hour.
Who says Amsoil synthetic lubricants don't make a difference? ?????
Moto Guzzi Runs 158.238 MPH.Takes Three More Land Speed Records away from Harley Davidson
Woodstock, GA-- In a continuing assault on the record book, the Moto Guzzi "Cooked Goose" Land Speed Record Team recently set three new world marks inone day, reachin speeds in excess of 158 mph ona production model Moto Guzzi 1100 Sport. The Moto Guzzi team is now the record-holder in nine different classes, all of which were once ruled by Harley Davidson.
The latest records were set March 23-24th at an official East Coast Timing Association (ECTA) time trial event held on the one-mile course at Maxton, North Carolina. The record shattering 1996 (carb version) 11oo Sport was ridden by Sidney
Conn of Statesville, NC. The Cooked Goose Racing Team ended the weekend taking the Harley records in 1350cc at 158.238 mph, and 3000 cc at 152,801 mph - Production Pushrod classes.
Other memebers of the team include Mitch Freshour, Todd Ross, chief mechanic Russell Duke, Susan Agin, Tip Paul, John Wilcox and Sheldon Aubut.
The Guzzi team had already taken the 2000cc record August of last year at Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah with Mitch Freshour on board. These four classes are in addition to the five previous records owned by the team, which were set on a 1000 cc 1989 Le Mans V in the "A-Frame Partial Streamliner Pushrod Gas" classification. (Bonneville's sanctioning group, the Southern California Timing Association and the East Coast Timing Association recognize one another's world speed records.
The record-setting 1100 Sport is essentially stock, with factory ignition, airbox, carbs, exhaust, wheels, bodywork and starting system. The standard 90-degree 1100 cc Moto Guzzi V-0Twin engine has been modified with a race cam, bigger pistons, taller gearing, and headwork. In preparation for racing, the cylinder head was recontoured by Mike Rich at Rich Motorsports in Manorville, Ny. (1-866-676-7767). For low drag and excellent lubrication under extreme conditions, the Cooked Goose Racing team used synthetic lubricants, supplied by Discovery Oil in Naples, Florida.
Describing the performance of the 1100 Sport, Sidney Conn had this to say: "The tach snapped to 10,000 in first, 10,000 in second, 10,000 in third, 10,000 in fourth and 9200 in 5th. I was so mesmerized by the tach needle that after I went through the traps, I forgot to shut down right away. I sat up to provide some air braking and the wind blast almost tore me off the bike!"
The new world marks were the latest skirmish in a continuing Guzzi-vs-Harley battle that started in October, 1999 at Bonneville. In it's very first attempt, the Moto Guzzi team, then riding a 1989 Le Mans, broke the land speed records in bothe the 1000cc push-rod production and partial streamline production gas classes ... beating Harley Davidsons in both instances.
The entire Cooked Goose team is made up of volunteers, although Moto Guzzi North America has provided significant support for their effort. This grass-roots organization has raised funds from Moto Guzzi owners around the globe, by phone and the Internet.
